Friends of the American Merchant Marine Museum
Gallery 2

The former Music Room of the Barstow home picks up the theme of “Ships Made America” from 1945 onward. Dominated by a huge model of the ocean liner SS Washington, this gallery also features the tiny but exquisitely detailed collection of ships from world history crafted by model shipwright Wilhelm Heinrich. A corner alcove contains “Gallant Ship” awards. These recognized ships and their crews for “participating in outstanding or gallant action in a marine disaster or other emergency to save life or property at sea. This includes the unit citation for the SS Meredith Victory, which in 1950 performed the largest humanitarian rescue operation ever conducted by a single ship.
